Soon

In blessed silence
of dim Spring days
new grasses murmur
flutes of sharp lilies sing
tiny new earthworms
sprout from egg cases
stretch themselves
humming underground.

Soon the red lily
trumpets Summer
the morning glories
vine and flower
play lavender music
on every string
while lettuces hum along
with the garlic.

But for today
seeds only whisper
promises of fair trade
riches of the soil
for just a touch of love
sending dreams of plenty
ornamented by sun’s gold
into our chilly lives.
