Winter’s Lovely, but…

a sonnet wishing Spring

Monarchs love messy gardens!

Soon with Summer sun will come the days
Of dirt-streaked face and happy mud-caked feet
As all the soil web returns to see
That heat and light and warm breeze can still meet.
Those cold wet flats of seeded coco coir
That hunker under lights and slowly crack
Will automagically become themselves
As they take life from me and give it back.
The Monarch butterfly will come again
And find the milkweed I will plant for her;
The hummingbirds are moving north now, too,
To fill our ears again with small wings’ whir.
I would not wish away my life, but still,
My heart will leap up with the daffodil.
